Monitor Refresh Rate Calculator

Bought a fast monitor but not sure it's running fast? Your screen's real refresh rate shows up below in about two seconds, with nothing to install.

Frame Times for Common Refresh Rates

Frame time is how long one refresh stays on the screen. Divide 1,000 by the refresh rate to get it in milliseconds.

Refresh rate Frame time G-Sync or FreeSync cap
60 Hz 16.67 ms 57 FPS
75 Hz 13.33 ms 72 FPS
100 Hz 10.00 ms 97 FPS
120 Hz 8.33 ms 117 FPS
144 Hz 6.94 ms 141 FPS
165 Hz 6.06 ms 162 FPS
180 Hz 5.56 ms 177 FPS
240 Hz 4.17 ms 237 FPS
360 Hz 2.78 ms 357 FPS
480 Hz 2.08 ms 477 FPS

Why Cap FPS Just Under Your Refresh Rate

G-Sync and FreeSync make the screen wait for each new frame, which stops tearing. They only stay on while your frame rate is below the screen's top refresh rate.

Frame limiters can overshoot a little. That's why Blur Busters advises a cap at least 3 FPS under the refresh rate, such as 141 FPS on a 144 Hz screen. Set it in the game if you can, or in your graphics driver if not.

Screen Running Below Its Rated Hz?

If the test shows 60 Hz on a 144 Hz monitor, Windows is often still set to the lower rate. Go to Start, then Settings, System, Display and Advanced display.

Pick the highest rate next to Choose a refresh rate, then select Measure again at the top of this page. If the higher rate isn't in that list, check your monitor's manual for the cable and port it needs.

When the Reading Looks Wrong

Browsers usually draw a new frame once per screen refresh, which is how this test works. They also pause that drawing in background tabs, so keep this tab in front while it measures.

Battery saving can slow the browser down too. Chrome warns that its Energy Saver mode can change how games and video run, so plug in a laptop before you test.

Got two or more screens? Drag this window onto the one you want to check, then measure again.

How Refresh Rate and FPS Fit Together

The refresh rate is the most frames your screen can show each second. FPS is how many frames your graphics card makes, and any above the refresh rate never reach your eyes.

Don't know your FPS yet? The FPS calculator estimates it for your parts and game. If you're getting fewer frames than you should, start with these common causes of low FPS, or see whether your processor holds back your graphics card with the bottleneck calculator.
