How to Manage Services in Windows (Start and Stop Them)

Knowing how to manage services in Windows allows you to control how and which ones startup.

Of course, you can also remove all of them completely. This is obviously the least done thing but we will show you how just to be more thorough.

By turning off unused or unwanted services, allows you the benefit of having the option to turn it on, if you ever need it in the future.

The other benefit of disabling them in Windows is that you save yourself some system resources to gain better performance from your computer.

We will go through all the aspects of altering anything to with Windows Services under each subheading.

  2. Type ‘services’.
  3. Left-click on the ‘Services’ search result.

How to start or stop services

Open the services app as shown above.

2. Right-click on the service in order to select start or stop

right click to select start or stop

Right-click on the service and left-click on ‘Properties’ in the contextual menu.

Once you have right-clicked on the one that you want to work with, a new contextual menu will appear. In the menu, you will have an option to either start or stop the service.

Left-click on the option you want. Please note that you cannot click on the option that reflects your service’s current state.

So, if your service is running, you won’t be able to click on ‘Start’. The same holds true for when your service is not running, the option for ‘Stop’ will be disabled.

How to set a service to start or stop at startup

1. Right-click on the service and select Properties

open service properties

Right-click on it and left-click on ‘Properties’ in the contextual menu.

2. Choose the Startup type from the drop-down menu

choose startup type

Right-click on the service that you wish to set the startup behavior for. Left-click on ‘Properties’ and you will have the properties of that service open.

Left-click on the dropdown arrow in the combo box next to ‘Startup type’. Left-click on the startup type you want from the options in the list.

There are four startup options to choose from. Here is what each one does:

1. Automatic (Delayed Start)

The automatic delayed start option will start your service 2 minutes after Windows has started up.

2. Automatic

It will automatically start when Windows starts.

3. Manual

The service will only be started by Windows or a program when it’s needed to run.

4. Disabled

This will keep the service-disabled, under all conditions, until you set it differently.

How to remove a service

It is highly recommended that you make a restore point in Windows first. That way, if you accidentally remove a service that you can’t get back, you are able to restore Windows to a previously saved state. Have a look at our other article on how to set a restore point.
