Fix Optimized Battery Charging Not Working On A MacBook

If you're a MacBook user, you're probably familiar with the Optimized Battery Charging feature. Introduced by Apple in macOS Catalina, this feature is designed to extend the lifespan of your MacBook's battery by reducing the time it spends fully charged.

However, like any technology, it's not perfect. Some users have reported that Optimized Battery Charging isn't working as expected.

1. Ensure You're Using macOS Catalina or Later

Optimized Battery Charging is only available on macOS Catalina (10.15.5) and later. If you're using an older version of macOS, you'll need to update your system.

  • Go to the Apple menu (Apple Menu) in the top-left corner of your screen.

  • Select "System Preferences" > "Software Update."

  • If an update is available, click "Update Now."

2. Enable Location Services

As mentioned earlier, Optimized Battery Charging uses location services to determine your typical charging locations. If location services are disabled, the feature won't work.

  • Go to the Apple menu (Apple Menu) and select "System Preferences."

  • Click "Security & Privacy" > "Privacy."

  • Select "Location Services" from the sidebar.

  • Ensure that "Enable Location Services" is checked.

  • Scroll down and make sure that "System Services" is also checked.

3. Check Battery Health Management Settings

Optimized Battery Charging is part of the Battery Health Management system. If this is turned off, the feature won't work.

  • Go to the Apple menu (Apple Menu) and select "System Preferences."

  • Click "Battery."

  • Select "Battery Health" from the sidebar.

  • Ensure that "Battery Health Management" is turned on.

4. Reset the SMC

The System Management Controller (SMC) is responsible for managing various hardware functions, including battery charging. Resetting the SMC can sometimes resolve issues with Optimized Battery Charging.

5. Calibrate Your Battery

Battery calibration can help your MacBook more accurately determine its charge level, which can improve the performance of Optimized Battery Charging.

  • Charge your MacBook to 100% and leave it plugged in for at least two more hours.

  • Unplug your MacBook and use it until the battery drains to 0% and it shuts down.

  • Leave it off for at least five hours.

  • Charge your MacBook back to 100% without interruption.

6. Check for Software Updates

Apple regularly releases updates to macOS that can fix bugs and improve performance. If Optimized Battery Charging isn't working, it's worth checking if there's an update available.

  • Go to the Apple menu (Apple Menu) and select "System Preferences."

  • Click "Software Update."

  • If an update is available, click "Update Now."
